San Pasqual Battlefield Site Location Project Overview

Author: Project Director George H. Hruby

The San Pasqual Battlefield Site Location Project is a non-profit cooperative effort by members of the community to establish the location of sites relevant to the Battle of San Pasqual and supported by archaeological evidence. In addition, the project hopes to initiate an official attempt by State and San Diego authorities to excavate Mule Hill in order to retrieve whatever artifacts and crucial historical information has not yet been lost to treasure hunters. It is also this project's intention to locate any artifacts believed from the Battle of San Pasqual, and retrieve same with the purpose of safekeeping from both environmental disintegration and from treasure hunters. It is hoped that such said artifacts, if in fact found, may be considered for display at the San Pasqual Battlefield Museum.

This project involves a coordinated "sweep" by metal detectors of ten sites that are believed involved with the Battle of San Pasqual. Some of the sites are already confirmed as archaeological sites related to the battle, while others are believed to be possible sites yet awaiting further investigation and confirmation. The primary function of the sweep is to attempt to locate artifact debris related to the Battle of San Pasqual. It is this project's intention that in finding such said debris, it may be preserved from further deterioration, relocation and/or theft by treasure hunters and artifact collectors. Furthermore, since the actual location of the battle has been subject to pure conjecture, finding any related artifact debris on or near the battlefield would help finally establish actual site location relevant to the battle. Finally, such found debris would be the first documented artifacts ever recorded as actually being found on the battlefield and would be eligible for later placement at the San Pasqual Battlefield Museum for display and educative purposes.
